Thinking of gifts. So many gifts. It is changing me as I ponder the abundance, not the lack. Yet I was laid low as I read the words of John Piper today from his book God is the Gospel. John writes, “It is stunning how seldom God Himself is proclaimed as the greatest gift of the gospel.”
Piper elaborates, “If the enjoyment of God Himself is not the final and best gift of love, then God is not the greatest treasure, his self-giving is not the highest mercy, the gospel is not the good news that sinners may enjoy their Maker, Christ did not suffer to bring us to God, and our souls must look beyond Him for satisfaction.”
Oh soul of mine–you who hunt for beauty, for treasure, for finding His multitude of mercies even in the mundane–remember that He is the best gift of love. “The gift is God Himself, above all his other gifts.”
He is the giver of all good things. But the truest gift is Himself, open and poured out that I might be HIS!
Praise to the Giver of all my grace gifts–my great God and Savior, my greatest treasure. He is too majestic to merely enumerate. He is above all and over all. He cannot be contained in a list, He is the Source of all good and He is mine!
