So today marked the end of an era–and another rung on her escape ladder. She lost her first tooth.
It came out with a bite of an apple and an admixture of anxiety and thrill. A small, white, perfect little pearl. And I’m afraid the bigger one pushing from behind will find too tight a fit to nudge into the waiting spot.
Such a metaphor for her–for Anna who is tucked in a tight spot here in our hearts. A little pearl sown in the shell of a family . . . all safe . . .all loved.
But we know what happens next–more teeth will be replaced, more “too small” clothes will be boxed up and sent away. More birthdays. More growing. And, little by little, more losing. But much is gained along the way as we nurture our little daughter. What joy to stand alongside as she skips her little milestones in a six-year-old river of life.
Smile big, Miss Anna. You are growing up!
